Dear 1st grade Families,
I am delighted to welcome you to a new school year and I am very excited to be your child’s 1st grade teacher. First grade is a time for your child to take root and grow into a curious, confident and joyous young person! Before we get started, I’d like for you to know a few things about me.
I was born and raised in Connecticut. I attended the School of American Ballet when I was a teenager and danced as a professional ballet dancer with the New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet. After “retiring” from dance, I attended NYU and studied psychology. I finished my collegiate studies with a Masters in Education. This is my 11th year as a classroom teacher and my 8th year as a West coaster! I live in Truckee with my husband, Rich, and our rescued pup, Dakota. I love to paddle board, backpack the High Sierra, teach and practice yoga and study wildflowers.
1st grade students are welcome in their classroom at 8:25am every school morning. The academic day begins at 8:30am. Please make sure your child is prepared to start his/her day with a full belly and a good night’s rest. Students should bring a healthy snack, lunch, water bottle and sunscreen (sticks, please, no squeeze bottles) to school with them each day in a sturdy, good sized backpack. Make sure all your child’s belongings are labeled clearly with their first and last name. Please help your child practice unpacking and packing their belongings. This is a learned skill for some.
Each Monday, your child will receive a homework packet to be completed throughout the week. It will be due the following Monday. It will include Friday IS work. The packet will also include a list of 8-10 spelling words. The words will be an extension of our phonics work we do in class. Spelling tests will take place on Monday mornings.
I have a bunch of field trips planned for this school year- it should be a blast! To name a few: Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe, Animal Ark and the Reno Planetarium. To make sure our trips are a success, I will depend on parent chaperones. Please make sure you have updated paperwork in the office and completed fingerprinting to drive for our field trips.
Parent-teacher communication is essential to ensuring your child has a successful school year. You can reach me by email Monday-Friday between 7:45am-5:00pm. My email address is: [email protected]. On Mondays, I will send home a Monday Note. This classroom newsletter will contain important updates regarding volunteer opportunities, field trips, important dates, classroom nuts and bolts and spelling word lists.
I look forward to learning all about you and your family during these first few weeks of school. To help me prepare for the school year, please fill out the “All About My Child” and “Free to be You!” survey (found on the Downloads section of this website) and return them to me the first week of school.
This is going to be a wonderful school year and I look forward to adventures together!
Warmest regards,
Ms. Marisa
